before entering a game, you pick a character card. every player's character is visible to everyone.

each character has 3 abilities (each are of passives and/or actives):
- passive: always active when conditions are met
- active: can be locked in only during the action phase

abilities range from information to protection to elimination. they interact with items, other abilities, game phases, etc, in many unique ways.

what are rare and legendary cards?

characters come in three rarities:

- common: standard characters anyone can pick freely
- rare: stronger characters with limited slots per match (0-4 depending on player count). you pick one before entering the lobby and roll for a slot — if you win, you play it; if not, you play your common pick instead
- legendary: game-changing characters with very limited slots (0-1 per match). same roll mechanic, higher stakes

some rare and legendary cards have unique win conditions that exist alongside, or replace, the normal win conditions (unless stated (chaos leader win condition cannot be overridden)).

items are a core strategic layer, not an afterthought.

- each player has a fronthand (3 visible items (items visible are not actually known, just the count)) and a backhand (1 hidden item)
- you draw items each morning from the item machine
- during the day, you can trade items freely. at night, trading is limited to talk/trades only. during trials, only using when able
- items span 6 color categories (blue, red, purple, white, grey, pink) with effects covering protection, information, suppression, elimination, avoidance, and more
- you can lie about what's in your inventory.

there are 80+ items currently designed, each with detailed tags, edge cases, and interaction rules.

how does the condemned system work?

this is verdition's twist on the "kill at night" mechanic.

the chaos leader picks one chaos member each chapter to become the condemned. the condemned must eliminate someone before the end of their third night, or they're killed off and order wins that chapter. nobody knows who the condemned is, not even other chaos members.

if the condemned succeeds, a trial begins where order tries to vote out the right person. this creates layered hidden information and the condemned is under time pressure.

order wins by voting out all condemned correctly in trials, vote out chaos leader during the final trial, or if all chaos members are dead with no way to appoint a new chaos leader.

chaos wins by deceiving order in all trials, or if the chaos leader survives the final trial.

the final trial triggers after all condemned trials are complete and each faction has won at least half the trials. there are no draw conditions by default.
